# Assignments

Everything you have to do lives on the Assignments page, whether it came from your school or you added it yourself.

## Add an assignment

Click New on the Assignments page, or press the add button on your phone. Give it a title, a class and a due date. Planner picks the type from the title, so "Unit 3 test" is a test, and you can change it. Most work is due by the end of the day, so the due time stays hidden until you press Time. Add attachment, under the due date, attaches a file or link right away.

Type the title the way you'd say it, like "Lab report Friday Chemistry 45m", and Planner reads back what it found. Press Fill in, or Enter, to put it into the form.

Everything else sits under More options: priority, an estimate, notes, a reminder from 1 day to 2 weeks before, and Repeat, which includes certain days of the week and an end date. Tick In-class assignment for work you do in class, and Planner leaves it off your study plan. How hard it is follows the class, and you can change it on the assignment later.

## Quick Add

Quick Add, at the top of your dashboard, turns one line of plain English into an assignment. "Lab report Friday Chemistry" is enough. You can add more to the same line:

- **A length:** "45m" or "1h" sets how long it should take.
- **Effort:** "#hard" or "#light" sets how much effort it takes.
- **A link:** paste a link and it's attached to the assignment instead of ending up in the title.
- **Next class:** with the Schedule view set up, "worksheet next Bio" is due at the start of that class's next meeting.

## In class now

When a class on your calendar is on, the top of your dashboard says so, like "In AP Biology now", with when that class meets next. Tap Add and type what your teacher just said, like "read pages 40 to 45 instead". It goes to that class and is due at the start of its next meeting, so you don't type the class name or work out which day it meets. Write a day, like "quiz Thursday", and that day is used instead.

It shows for 5 minutes after class ends too, since that's often when homework gets called out. In a different room than your calendar says? Tap the x and Quick Add won't use that class until your next one. It needs the Schedule view with your class times synced.

## Add highlighted text

Homework often shows up in an email, a Google Doc or a class page. Highlight it, like "Read pages 112 to 134 and answer questions 1 to 5 by Thursday", and press the shortcut. Quick Add opens in a small box over what you're reading, with that text already read back, and the page it came from attached as a link. Press Enter to add it and you're back where you were. Esc closes it without adding anything.

- **Mac app:** Control+Option+Q, in any app. The first time, your Mac asks to let Severn Planner use Accessibility so it can read what's highlighted. The page is attached when you're in Safari, Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Vivaldi or Aside; other apps, like Mail, attach nothing. Change the shortcut in Mac Settings > Keyboard.
- **Chrome:** Alt+Shift+Q, with the Planner extension (version 1.6.0 or later). Change it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Google Docs sometimes keeps highlighted text from extensions; then the box asks you to copy and paste it.

## Paste a list

Got a syllabus or a list of dates from your teacher? Open Quick Add's Paste a list tab, paste the dates in, and each line becomes an assignment you can check before adding. Lines without a date and dates that already passed start unticked.

## Share a class's dates

Your classmates have the same tests and deadlines. On a class page, Share makes a Class Pack link with the dates you pick, and anyone who opens it can add them to their own Planner. Someone without an account gets them as soon as they sign up. Only names, types and dates go in the link, never grades or notes. Share shows once a class has a few assignments.

After you paste a list, or when your school brings in a big batch of dates for one class, Planner offers the link with a preview of the dates, so you can send it to your class chat. Not now closes it.

## Repeating assignments

Type something like "Vocab quiz every Friday" or "Reading log every Mon and Wed until Dec 18" into Quick Add and it sets up the whole series. Without an end date, it runs to the end of the school year.

## Start dates for projects

Give a project a start date and it stays out of your lists and your plan until then. It still shows on the calendar on its due date.

## Attachments and links

Open an assignment and press Add attachment, or Add resource on a class page, to pick a PDF, an image, a Google Drive file or a link. On a phone or tablet, the same menu has Take photo, which opens the camera so you can snap a handout or the board. With an assignment open, you can also paste a copied screenshot, or drop PDFs and images onto it. Links in an imported assignment's description show up in its Resources too.

Files stay on the device that added them. On another device, the assignment shows that a file was added elsewhere.

## Work with several at once

Tap Select on the Assignments page to mark a batch done, move it to another day, change its type or delete it. Each one has an Undo.

## Search

Press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows) to search assignments, classes, attachments, pages and settings. Type a day, like "friday", "tomorrow", "10/16" or "overdue", to see what's due then, and add a class to narrow it, like "bio friday".

## Recently deleted

Deleted an assignment or a class by mistake? It stays in Settings, under Privacy & data, then Recently deleted, for 5 days. Restore puts it back with its reminders and files.
